Alcohol
is the number one drug of abuse in the United States. The cost associated
with alcohol use/abuse, (health, social services, insurance rates,
lower productivity, legal, etc.), are approximately three times the
cost associated with all illegal drugs combined.
Substance abuse and driving has killed over 3,000,000 Americans from
1900 to present day. This is more than all the wars America has fought
in from the revolutionary war to the gulf war. |
| |
 |
The
use/abuse of alcohol and other drugs is closely associated with the
leading causes of death among adolescents who drug and drive or ride
with someone who is. |
| |
 |
The
earlier in life a person starts using alcohol and other drugs, the
more likely he/she is to experience drug dependence. |
| |
 |
Adolescents
can become addicted to drugs faster than adults. Addiction can occur
within 1-2 years of regular use by teens (normally 5-20 years in adults).
|
| |
 |
It
takes less alcohol or a drug to produce intoxication in youth than
adults and will affect the driving to a greater degree |
| |
 |
Many
victims of a drunk or drugged driver are passengers in the car with
them or innocent people at the wrong place at the wrong time. |
| |
 |
Drug
use and driving is against the law in every state. The cost effects
everyone, higher auto and health insurance rates, taxes and the ultimate
cost, losing a loved one. |
| |
 |
The
alcohol content in a 12oz beer, 5oz glass of wine, 8oz wine cooler,
and 1½oz of 90 proof liquor is approximately the same. |
| |
 |
Over
4000 teens are killed and 110,000 injured every year due to drug use
and driving. |
| |
 |
Combining
alcohol and other drugs, even over-the- counter type, multiplies the
dangerous effects of both. Never mix alcohol and other drugs! |
| |
 |
Don't
be a victim, don't drink or drug and drive or ride with someone who
is. PLEASE! |
